Hello I'm Richard Ager and Welcome to NH Outlook. Whether it's a huge issue such as health care reform of the President encouraging kids to stay in school, it seems the common ground occupied by Americans is shrinking, leaving less room for public debate and reasonable compromise. Joining us on Outlook to discuss those- and related issues - if we can - Drew Cline, Editorial Page Editor of the NH Union Leader; Ralph Jimenez, Editorial page Editor for the Concord Monitor; and James Pindell of nhpoliticalreport.com
Track: From the Political Library at the State Library in Concord, welcome to NH Outlook.
Soundup: Obama Address disk 01:51:35 There are also those who claim that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms -- the reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.
Joe Wilson: You lie! 01:51:45
Track: In any debate, there is a line that divides passionate argument from blind accusations and unreasoning rage.
Soundup: Obama Town Hall Disk 7;28:55 It came from Karl Marx. You ever heard of him?
Track: The question today: Have we crossed that line to where each side thinks the worst of the other - and no progress can be made?
Obama Town Hall Disk 7:30:09 A poster of Hitler as Obama - who wants to talk about that.
Soundup: Accusation of implants and/or death panels
Soundup: 7:29:19 Thank you for your honesty - come on , be honest.

1: DOES IT SEEM TO YOU THAT ALONG WITH EVERY ISSUE COMES A FOG MACHINE? JUST BEFORE YOU'VE SPOTTED THE OUTLINES OF WHAT'S IMPORTANT, DOWN COMES THE FOG FULL OF MISINFORMATION, DISINFORMATION, DIVERSIONS AND SCARE TACTICS.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE MOMENT THE PRESIDENT SAID HE WAS GOING TO TACKLE HEALTH CARE, I JUST KNEW WE WERE IN FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF STORIES FULL OF HALF-TRUTHS AND DISTORTIONS ABOUT HEALTH CARE NORTH OF THE BORDER.
THE TALE OF SHONA HOLMES - WHO CLAIMS SHE WAS FORCED TO GO TO THE U.S. FOR LIFE-SAVING SURGERY ON A BRAIN TUMOR. TURNS OUT THE TUMOR WAS ACTUALLY A BENIGN CYST THAT SHE WANTED TO GET RID OF QUICKER THAN THE SYSTEM WOULD BOOK HER. SHE SPENT ABOUT $100,000 FOR TREATMENT AT THE MAYO CLINIC.
ONE CANADIAN AUTHOR WROTE: FOR YEARS, CANADIANS HAVE FEARED THE AMERICAN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM; NOW AMERICANS ARE BEING TOLD TO FEAR OURS.
2: IT SEEMS LIKE THERE ARE FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS SUCH AS SINGLE PAYER. I REMEMBER IN 2004, RICHARD GEPHARDT WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. I ASKED HIM - WHAT ABOUT SINGLE PAYER? HE SAID WOULDN'T THAT BE NICE? BUT THEY'LL NEVER GO FOR IT. AND SO HE PROPOSED A REALLY COMPLICATED SCHEME INSTEAD. WHICH IS SOMEWHAT LIKE ALWAYS SEEMS TO HAPPEN.
VOTE HAS BEEN PROMISED LATER IN THE SESSION.
3: EVERYONE KNOWS POLITICS AIN'T BEANBAG - MEANING IT CAN BE TOUGH. BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO COVER POLITICS. IS IT OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO POINT OUT - OR EVEN AVOID GIVING COVERAGE TO THE MOST EGREGIOUS BEHAVIOR?
SEEING THOSE PROTESTERS WITH THEIR POSTERS OF OBAMA AS HITLER WAS CREEPY.
4: AND WHAT ABOUT WHEN STORIES ARE INHERENTLY LACKING IN BALANCE - THE NEONAZI HOLOCAUST DENIER VS. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR?
5: OBAMA SAID ON 60 MINUTES "I WILL ALSO SAY THAT IN THE ERA OF 24-HOUR CABLE NEWS CYCLES, THAT THE LOUDEST, SHRILLEST VOICES GET THE MOST ATTENTION," FAIR COMMENT?
6: AT LEAST HEALTH CARE IS A REAL ISSUE ON WHICH OPINIONS MAY VARY. THERE ARE ALSO WHAT I HAVE TO CALL MANUFACTURED ISSUES. CASE IN POINT: THE FUSS OVER THE PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS TO SCHOOL KIDS. PARENTS HELD KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL FOR FEAR OF THEM BEING INDOCTRINATED.
7: WE HAVE A 16-YEAR OLD STUDENT AT NASHUA SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL WRITING A REGULAR BLOG FOR OUR "PATCHWORK NATION" PROJECT - AND SHE WROTE THIS: "AFTER LISTENING TO THE SPEECH THERE IS NO WAY THAT YOU CAN TRY AND SAY HE WAS ATTEMPTING TO BRAINWASH STUDENTS…PICTURE YOURSELF AN 11-YEAR OLD STUDENT BEING TOLD THAT YOU CAN HELP CHANGE AMERICA. BY WRITING THIS LETTER YOU ARE CONFIRMING THE THOUGHT 'HEY, MAYBE I CAN CONTRIBUTE SOMEHOW'. PARENTS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM FEW WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT WHEN SAID BY THE RIGHT PERSON." WORDS FROM A TEENAGER.
8: WHAT ROLE DOES THE MEDIA PLAY IN THIS?
AN ARTICLE IN ESPN.COM BEGAN: "ANOTHER ALTOGETHER ANGRY WEEK ENDS IN AMERICA.
IT GOES ON TO RECOUNT THE UGLY SHOUTING TIRADE BY TENNIS STAR SERENA WILLIAMS.
HER NAME - SERENA - MEANS "COMPOSED, PEACEFUL, CHEERFUL". MISNOMER.
9: UNION LEADER EDITORIALS
DREW - IN A NUMBER OF EDITORIALS, THE UNION-LEADER HAS STATED THAT THIS MESS IS THE PRESIDENT'S FAULT. QUOTE: "AMERICANS HAVE BEEN TREATED SHABBILY BY THIS PRESIDENT AND HIS PARTY. THAT TREATMENT IS THE CAUSE OF THEIR ANGER." AND A RECENT EDITORIAL SAID JOE WILSON SIMPLY SHOUTED AT THE WRONG PART OF THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH. QUOTE: "OBAMA WAS RIGHT ABOUT THAT. HE JUST LIED ABOUT A BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF.
ARE YOU TROUBLED WITH USING THE WORD "LIE"?
CONCORD MONITOR EDITORIALS:
IN AN EDITORIAL LAST MONTH TITLED "ON THE FRINGE OF SOCIALIZED MEDICINE" YOU WROTE:
"MAJOR CHANGE, PARTICULARLY IF IT INVOLVES THE GOVERNMENT, BRINGS OUT PROFESSIONAL PROVOCATEURS, CONSPIRACY BELIEVERS, CRAZIES AND IDEOLOGICALLY UNHINGED PEOPLE LIKE FORMER ALASKA GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN." CLEARLY SOME RESPECT FOR THE REPUBLICAN VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE.
YOU GO ON: "THE MEDIA PAYS ATTENTION TO SUCH PEOPLE ON THE EXTREMES OF BELIEF OR BEHAVIOR BECAUSE THEY DRAMATIZE THE DEBATE……. BUT FOR A TIME, AS HAPPENED WITH THE SO-CALLED DEATH PANELS, GULLIBLE PEOPLE BELIEVE THEIR RANTINGS.
"THE CURRENT AMERICAN SYSTEM, WHICH PAYS FAR TOO MUCH FOR FAR TOO LITTLE AND STILL LEAVES 47 MILLION PEOPLE UNINSURED, IS PERHAPS THE DUMBEST ONE YET CONCOCTED."
YOU BOTH AGREED ON LETTING THE PRESIDENT SPEAK TO SCHOOL KIDS.
9: PEW CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND THE PRESS. A NEW SURVEY RELEASED SEPT. 13 SHOWS TWO MAJOR FINDINGS. TELEVISION IS STILL THE MAJOR NEWS SOURCE FOR MOST PEOPLE. BUT - NEWS ORGANIZATIONS ARE LESS TRUSTED. 60% OF RESPONDENTS SAY THE PRESS IS BIASED. IN 1985, ONLY 45% THOUGHT THE PRESS WAS BIASED.
FOX GETS 72% FAVORABLE FROM REPUBLICANS AND ONLY 43% FROM DEMOCRATS.
CNN IS THE REVERSE WITH 75% OF DEMOCRATS APPROVING AND 44% OF REPUBLICANS
INDEPENDENTS GIVE BOTH ONLY 55% FAVORABLE.
10: LOOK AT THE PROFUSION OF OUTLETS. BROADCAST TV. CABLE. RADIO. NEWSPAPERS. INTERNET. FACEBOOK. TWITTER.
IT'S MUCH EASIER TO JUST BE EXPOSED TO YOUR KIND OF NEWS. YOU CAN AVOID THE NEWS YOU DON'T AGREE WITH.
11: DURING HIS ADDRESS TO CONGRESS, PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID "I WON'T STAND BY WHILE THE SPECIAL INTERESTS USE THE SAME OLD TACTICS TO KEEP THINGS EXACTLY THE WAY THEY ARE. IF YOU MISREPRESENT WHAT'S IN THIS PLAN, WE WILL CALL YOU OUT. " ASSUMING HE FOLLOWS THROUGH, WILL THAT MAKE THIS DEBATE CLEANER - OR MUDDIER?
